As part of the Works of Heart (1970 - 2023) retrospective exhibition of one of the most important Croatian artists, Sanja Iveković, MSU Zagreb is organizing the symposium Works of Heart: An Archive in Becoming, which will be held on Tuesday, December 5th, 2023 at 5 p.m. at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Sanja Iveković’s exhibition Works of Heart at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb is the first major retrospective in the artist’s native country. Organized in the framework of the exhibition, the symposium Works of Heart: An Archive in Becoming focuses on the legacy of Iveković’s 50-year-long career and the responsibility of local institutions in collecting, preserving, and creating a relevant knowledge base on the work of the artists of Iveković’s generation, who, in the post-socialist period, have often received more institutional recognition abroad than at home. In response to this situation, in Croatia as well as in other Eastern European countries, numerous independent, private, and non-governmental initiatives, artist estates, and archives have been formed and dedicated to the legacies of the local neo-avantgarde artists. The symposium will gather representatives of a select number of these organizations who will share their achievements and experiences in relation to conceptual, organizational, archival, and financial aspects of their work. The aim of the symposium is to serve as a meeting point of different non-institutional archiving practices, as well as the space where the question of the legacy of Sanja Iveković’s work is posed in concrete terms, and where a future research center and archive dedicated to her work is being thought out and drafted.
