A Croatian artist with a Paris address, Davor Vrankić, is a drawing star. The I Promise You a Miracle exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art will be Vrankić's largest exhibition in Croatia to date. It will feature works from the beginning of his career in the early 1990s to new drawings created just before this exhibition in Zagreb.

Using only a 0.9 2B graphite pencil, without a sketch and a template, Vrankić creates drawings with impressively large dimensions so that, like living entities, he "spontaneously feeds upon all possible, new visual experiences." And these visual experiences with Vrankić have been very broad, ranging from comics and underground culture, studying the jackets of records, listening to avant-garde sounds, and immersing himself in the expressiveness of silent and classic films, until upon his arrival in Paris, he found a spiritual kinship with the Old Masters. The result is phantasmagoric worlds that reflect what the artist calls "personal realism." Vrankić plays with the perception of the observer, or as he says, "What we see at one point seems close to us, and at another it becomes foreign and strange."

 I Promise You a Miracle contains a selection of works from Vrankić's seven cycles that are mutually intertwined with and interpenetrated by each other. The cycles are not chronological because Vrankić sometimes returns them after many years. He often it leaves the drawing "open" – the imagination can always supplement it.

An example of an "endless drawing" is exhibited in Home Variations cycle of four polyptychs of 180 x 210 centimeters It is based on the principle of "cadavre exquis," where the edges of one drawing are the starting points of a second drawing and the second drawing is connected to the first but at the same time independent of it. In this way, each module from one polyptych is interchangeable with all four polyptychs as long as it maintains its position in the configuration, thus creating a drawing in constant change with millions of different options and interpretations. The exhibition will also feature animations in which the modules are constantly changing, creating the impression of a constantly new drawing. Another attraction of the exhibition s that the artist will begin to create a new work in the exhibition space in front of visitors – a monumental modular polyptych whose parts can function separately or as a whole.

The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive bilingual monograph with texts by art theorist Leonida Kovač and exhibition curator Kristina Bonjeković Stojković. The graphic design of the monograph is by Mirko Ilić.

Davor Vrankić, academic painter and graphic artist, was born in 1965 in Osijek. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 1991. From 1995 to 1999 he studied visual art at the University of Paris VIII in the Department of Art Plastiques. His works have been presented at many solo and group exhibitions and have received numerous awards. They have also been exhibited in major world museums, such as MoMA (New York), the Overholland Museum (Amsterdam), the Teaching Tang Museum (Saratoga Springs, New York), the Museum of Art (Ningbo, China), Center for Contemporary Art À cent mètres du center du monde (Perpignan), the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Rijeka), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Zagreb), the Modern Gallery (Zagreb), the Museum of Slavonia (Osijek), the Museum of Fine Arts (Osijek), and in private collections of some of the most prestigious collectors today, such as Georges Renand (Paris) and Ronald S. Lauder (New York). He lives and works in Paris.
