Homage to El Lissitzky
1956
oil / canvas
96.3 cm x 96.3 cm
A versatile artist – painter, sculptor, and graphic designer – Ivan Picelj named one of his best compositions after the great Russian artist, El Lissitzky, a designer and agitator from the heroic times of the historical avant-garde, when, just for a little while, the line between art and life didn’t exist. The protagonist of this painting - Homage to El Lissitzky - is the coloured surface. Clearly delineated coloured fields do not reveal the facture of the painter’s hand: his personality is stressed in the unobtrusive, balanced construction of the painted fields.
